For any versions prior to 8.8.0.0, an intermediate upgrade is recommended because pre-8.8.0.0 versions are not validated.
Note that release 8.9 is not a validated upgrade path. For non-validated upgrade paths, perform the upgrade with one or two switches initially before doing a widespread upgrade.
